Police on Monday picked up six pickets at the capital’s Mirpur during the nationwide dawn-to-dusk hartal called by Islami Ain Bastobayon Committee protesting the cabinet's approval over the new women policy.
Islami Oikya Jote (IOJ) Chairman Mufti Fazlul Haque Amini, also the ameer of the committee, announced the shutdown programme from a rally at the city’s Muktangon on March 8.
Kazi Wazed Ali, officer-in-charge of Mirpur Police Station, said police detained six people when some pickets blocked the road near Mirpur-10 intersection at about 9:00am.
The cabinet on March 7 approved the National Women Development Policy 2011 with a provision of equal share of women in property and their opportunity in employment and business.
The committee called the hartal mentioning the policy as against the principles of Quran.
Most of the shops, business establishments and educational institutions remained closed in the capital following the hartal.
A number of buses and minibuses even some private cars were seen plying on the city streets. Rickshaws were plying on the roads as usual.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police has taken all out preparation to maintain law and order in the capital during the hartal hours.
