The authorities cancelled voting at a polling centre in Bhola as union parishad polls are in progress in 12 districts of Chittagong, Khulna and Barisal divisions on Tuesday.
Six people were sentenced to two years imprisonment by a judicial magistrate for attempting to snatch a ballot box from Mohammad Hossain Registered Primary School in Bheduria union in Bhola Sadar upazila at about 9:00am.
Later, the authorities cancelled voting at the cente, reports our correspondent from Barisal saying that peaceful voting is going on in 92 other centres of the division.
The voting began in 190 unions of 24 upazilas in the 12 districts at about 8:00am, which will continue till 4:00pm without break.
In the first phase, polls to 568 UPs in the coastal districts will be held by April 3, according to the schedule announced by the Election Commission on February 24.
The EC will then announce the schedule for phase-wise elections to 4,300 UPs across the country.
A judicial magistrate and an executive magistrate will hear and deliver judgment instantly on cases of breach of electoral code of conduct and election-related crimes.
Officials at the EC Secretariat said around 32,000 candidates are vying for the posts of chairman, member and reserved member in 571 UPs in 72 upazilas of 12 coastal districts. Polls to three of the UPs have been stayed.
Earlier in 2003, polls to over 4,000 UPs were held when the BNP-led alliance was in power.
This time elections to 4,300 out of the 4,505 UPs will be held. And polls to 205 UPs won't be held now as tenure of many of those has not expired and some are facing legal tangles over boundary demarcation.
The UP polls were supposed to be held around two years ago. But the EC could not go for holding the polls in the absence of electoral laws and for other reasons.
The elections to municipalities held in January this year were largely influenced by the two major political parties.
